The Color Changing Dress?!
As if figuring out how to safely work, and costume design a show during a pandemic, wasn't hard enough already. I decided to raise the bar just a little higher.
This was by far one of the most ambitious projects I have taken on. The outcome however was well worth the headache and risk it was to create this effect.
The goal of this effect initially was to showcase Carrie Mae's journey to becoming an angel. I found this amazing UV reactive pigment on Etsy by a company named UNIGlow.
As Carrie Mae gets closer to heaven her dress slowly fades from the bright purple it began. In the very last scene, she reappears and her dress has fully transformed to white showcasing her transition to becoming a full angel.
Since this play was being performed outside we had the sun to work with as lighting. The pigment changes very vastly also and even the slightest bit of blockage from UV rays changes the color.
This meant the effect was a little uncontrollable at times. This was not exactly what I had originally envisioned, however, this new effect still gave Carrie Mae an otherworldly feel and kept me and audience members alike trying to decide if the dress was truly changing color.
